Dr. Raul Moreira’s speech – Director of Philately – during the National Philatelic Exhibition “VIANA 2008”
Ladies and Gentlemen I am beginning this speech, sending to all those who worked in the organization of “VIANA 2008” the XX National Philatelic Exhibition, which is being held in the remarkable city of Viana do Castelo “the Wien of Portugal” as “Frei Luis de Sousa”,a very special and touching greeting. This year, this Exhibition has also the participation of notable collections of Spanish and Croats’ Philatelists, to whom I present a very special greeting, sure that their participation will contribute for the success of this event, too. All my thanks are not only to the Organizers but also to the Municipality of Viana and all the local authorities, as they are the guarantee that the connection between this Exhibition and the day life of the city and the participation of its citizens is assured. The future of the Philately in Portugal such as in any other country is always connected with the Organizers’ skill for this kind of Exhibitions, achieving a very important participation of the public in general that are very often sceptic about tables which show stamps and to whom nothing else about is explained. To insure this target it is necessary that all the Displays and Exhibitions will be very attractive to all, chiefly to young people and also to break the wall which very often closes the Philatelists in their own rules that place them aside from the common people. This overture to the world can only be done by increasing the general interest in any Exhibition through guided visits to the Tables, developing the Opened Classes, where space and talent are devoted to the fitting of ichnography, not only the philately one, in order to involve the youth in the digital manipulation of the stamps in their PC; in short, giving examples that the Philately is an interesting and modern hobby. I am sure this “VIANA 2008” will be a great success in all means.
